Macro Food Details

The first lens that I purchased with my own money was a macro lens. I’d saved up from a little bit of photography client work here and there.

My first macro lens for food photography was the 60mm. I had at the time a cropped sensor camera, but my husband (then boyfriend!) had a full-frame that I could also use.

What I remember loving instantly about this lens was the bokeh and the vignetting. I loved how it picked up the light. I could tell this was different from other lenses and it was one of the first things that really allowed me to see the power of different lighting.

From there, I saved to purchase the 105mm Macro from Nikon. The 90-105mm focal length is a great macro lens for food. Here are some of the beautiful macro detail shots I’ve captured of macro food photography over the years.

Monochromatic Colour

Colour is something that moves us in unimaginable ways. I learned a lot about colour, as well as the love of colour from my friend Bea Lubas.

When I first started out in food photography I thought the more colour the better.

But when it comes to colour, less can certainly be more. Colour theory is a very fascinating topic with endless options to explore the beauty of food.

This mauve coloured background is not something I would have ever thought could be as beautiful as it is. It’s always a nice surprise when a colour can well, surprise you!
