Heirloom Tomato Portraits

There is something endlessly fascinating about heirloom tomatoes.

They appear in colours and shapes that are completely unlike the pristine supermarket versions many of us grew up with. These tomatoes are grown on a small local farm and range from deep green tinged with brown, to dusky red mottled with lime, to bright orange and yellow varieties that look like someone sculpted them by hand.

Instead of styling them as part of a dish, I wanted to hero their quirks by photographing them as portraits.

Each tomato sat on a backdrop that echoed its colouring, ensuring the shows matched their weird shape.

The imperfections are exactly what give them character, and I wanted viewers to pause and really notice the details.

This shoot was a reminder that beauty doesn’t have to be polished or symmetrical. Produce like this comes with its own personality, and sometimes the most interesting images happen when you let the subject stay raw and real.
