Food Photography: Grocery-store Cake Glow-up

One of my favourite things to do is to take a humble grocery-store cake and turn it into art. This usually involves me picking up a retro, ugly cake that feels pretty basic, but of course nostalgic, and adding some garnishes or embellishments.

Here, I paired the cakes and slices with fabrics for backdrops or added solid backdrops in Photoshop and played with the colour of shadows and layer styles.

You’ll find that I like photographing maraschino cherries, with stems of course.

I was curious to play with colour and the strength and saturation of the yellow, in particular, and how it changes the feeling of the image and the subject. I dabbled with bumping up the clarity for a nostalgic feeling.
